Bird Migration: How They Know When, Where and How Far

A bird weighing less than a mobile phone can leave northern Europe in autumn, cross the Sahara without stopping, and arrive at a specific patch of scrub in West Africa it has never seen. It does this using a head the size of a walnut, and we still do not fully understand how.

The trigger is light, not weather

Migration is set in motion mainly by day length, which is reliable in a way weather is not. Shortening days start a chain of hormonal changes that drive restlessness, heavy feeding and a switch in behaviour. Migratory birds under study show this as nocturnal fluttering at the same time their wild relatives depart, oriented in the direction the population travels.

Fuel before distance

Before a long crossing, birds gorge and can nearly double their body mass in fat. Some shrink digestive organs in flight to save weight. That fat is not comfort — for a bird crossing a desert or an ocean with no chance to land, it is the entire fuel tank, calculated against a distance it cannot break into stages.

At least four compasses

Birds appear to use the sun's arc by day and the rotation of star patterns by night, corrected against an internal clock. Many species also detect Earth's magnetic field, apparently through specialised cells and light-sensitive proteins in the eye. Add coastlines, mountain ridges and, in seabirds, a well-documented sense of smell, and the picture is not one instrument but a redundant navigation suite.

Inherited maps

Young cuckoos migrate alone, after the adults have already gone, to a destination they have never visited. Direction and duration appear to be encoded genetically. Cross-breeding experiments with populations that migrate on different headings have produced offspring that head off on an intermediate bearing — striking evidence that the route is inherited, not taught.

Why this matters on the ground

Migration turns conservation into an international problem. A species can be protected perfectly at its breeding grounds and still collapse because a single stopover wetland — where flocks refuel between two long legs — has been drained. Those stopover sites carry weight out of all proportion to their size, and they are the ones most often lost.

How migration is studied, and why the picture keeps changing

Much of what is known about migration was built from ringing: a numbered ring on a leg, and a small chance that someone somewhere reports it. That method produced the map, but slowly, and it says nothing about the route between the two points.

Three newer methods filled the gap. Geolocators, light enough for small songbirds, record light levels from which position can be estimated once the bird is recaptured and the device retrieved. Satellite and GPS tags, still limited to larger species by weight, return positions without recapture. And weather radar, which detects the mass of birds leaving on a given night, has turned migration into something that can be measured continent-wide in real time.

The consequence is that textbook statements from a few decades ago are being revised regularly — routes turn out to be less direct than assumed, stopovers longer, and individual variation greater. Where this article states something as established, it reflects current published material; where the research is moving, it says so rather than tidying the picture.
